Ryan Bingham ( George Clooney ) ist ständig auf Dienstreise. Sein Job: Er feuert Angestellte im Auftrag von Arbeitgebern, die zu feige sind, es selbst zu tun. Er liebt die soziale Losgelöstheit des Reisens, bis eine neue Mitarbeiterin versucht, ihm zwischenmenschliche Werte näher zu bringen.
Mit sechs Oscar-Nominierungen hat Up in the Air gute Chancen bei der Verleihung der Academy Awards 2010.
